Although most of the SAS seniors of 2008 will be attending UC Berkeley, UCLA, or other California institutions, others have left for their distant colleges with enthusiasm and anticipation. Alex Sapin flew to New Orleans for his orientation at Tulane (before leaving to avoid the Hurricane Gustav!) Lou Wright is in Greenwich Village, enjoying the artistic milieu before starting classes at the New College in New York City. Lynn Heere and Mari Saakjan are at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, already enjoying the changing seasons (and intense reading list)! And Alana Folson is the most intrepid explorer, reaching Bates College in Maine without even a parka! We will keep in touch with our far-flung alumni!

September 4th, 2008
Ninety students from seventeen middle schools, both public and private, began their academic careers in the SAS on July 1, 2008. There were 314 applications, so we know these students are especially motivated after being chosen to matriculate at Marshall. Students applied from Silverlake, Echo Park, Eagle Rock, Atwater, and Hollywood. But they also applied from North Hollywood, Culver City, Reseda, South Los Angeles, Carson, and Illinois! We expect a fantastic class of 2012.

May 30th, 2008
On May 27th, the School for Advanced Studies recognized the senior class of 2008 and also presented to honor roll students in the 9th, 10th, and 11th grades. The senior class once again saw 100% of the students admitted to college, with over 20% being accepted by UC Berkeley. 207 students were recognized for achieving high grades, which was more than 60% of all SAS students. This is remarkable, since the typical student took 3 AP courses and also honors courses in the past year. Especially notable was the 9th grade, in which 11 students achieved a 4.0 GPA and 52 out of 84 reached honor roll status. For a closer look at our amazing senior class, turn to page 12 of the June issue of the Los Feliz Ledger newspaper!
